Hey all,

I am a long time reader, first time poster.

I play online games alot, about 2-3 hours a day. When i am playing Day of Defeat Source sometimes i can play for hours with no problems, and the other times my game freezes up and there is not alot i can do apart from reboot the computer (this is happening more and more now days). I cant bring up the task manager or minimise the game back to my desktop, all i get is my game frozen and what ever sound was playing at the time going over and over like a broken record.

I have had this happen for about three weeks now and i have always thought it was just the steam application or the game its self, but i have had other people tell me that it happens to them as well, just not as much as me.
The shortest game i have had was "connect to server, shoot maybe 5 to 10 players and then freeze, then reboot and play again until next freeze.

Can you please look at this HiJackThis log and inform me if there is anything in there that could cause this, and while your checking can you please advise me on what processes or programs i can stop running. I seem to have a large amount of applications and processes start when ever i do a reboot.
I only want the bare essentials to start when i reboot, if i want anyother application, program or processes to start with reboot, I can always add them to the "Start Up" file.

see HiJackThis.exe log below.

If you can make sence of the dribble above, are there any more programs like HiJackThis.exe that would benifit me to run and post results.

Thanks for your time and great advice in advanance

Looking forward to hearing from you soon

PapaSmurfinNZ

Hi PapaSmurfinNZ, :flowers:

If you still need help please post a fresh HijackThis log and I'll be happy to look at it for you.

A new version of HijackThis has now been released, so before you repost your log please download and install the new version by following the instructions in Step 9 of the Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Note that it is unnecessary to uninstall the old version because the new one will be copied to a different folder.

Thanks for your patience!

Hey mate thanks for that, i will download the new verson of the program and then i will post the log.

I thought that it might have been a opperating system error so i re-installed a new operating system but that did not fix the problem.

Talk soon

Hi PapaSmurfinNZ,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1. Are you using a firewall? I see nothing in your log that would indicate that you have one installed and active.

If not I urge you to install one since it's your first defense against malware. There are several good but for free programmes available like:

Sygate
Kerio
Zone alarm

For a tutorial on Firewalls click: Understanding and Using Firewalls!

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

* Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
* Click the "Delete Cookies" button
* Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
* When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

* Go to Tools > Options.
* Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
* Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
* Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

* Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
* Let it scan your system for files to remove.
* Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
* Press OK to remove them.

4. Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please post the F-Secure report along with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

Hey mate, I did follow your instructions and did what you said but I was having a whole load of issues with programs that windows runs like explorer.exe, and others crashing all the time.
So what I have decided is Vista is to buggy for me to run and I wont reinstall it for about 6 – 12 months, therefore I re-installed Win Xp Pro onto my system and are in the process of re-installing all my programs. I still have the problem of my Half-life engine crashing while I am playing so when I have the system fully running with all that I need on it I will post a new log for you to view, if your still willing to help.
I have also installed zone alarm personal firewall as you suggested.

Thanks for your time

Hi PapaSmurfinNZ,

It certainly looks like there's no malware on your system anymore, but let's be sure.

1. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please reboot and post the SAS log along with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

Hi PapaSmurfinNZ,

Okay I think you're ready to go.

Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

You may re-enable hidden files now: Open Windows Explorer >Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is unchecked. Also check "Hide protected operating system files" and tick "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders", >Apply then OK.

In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

c. I recommend you to read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

d. If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here!

Glad I was able to help and if there are any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BleepingComputer Forums, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Good luck!
