Well I've ended up trying to deal with a slow PC (my girlfreinds) and run into a whole area of unknownness, I can build a bridge but I can't understand what empty registry keys are!!!! I refuse to pay money to spurious psuedo-companies so I've come to find some answers.

Welcome to BC!
Unless you really know what you are doing, stay away from the registry. Mucking about there can really cause your computer serious harm. I suggest you post in one of the other fourms about the problems you are having so our Members can help you.
