What this programs does:

SysAntivirus 2009 is a rogue anti-antivirus program from the same family as MS Antispyware 2009 and Nano Antivirus. Just like its predecessors, SysAntivirus 2009 is promoted through the use of misleading web popups and Trojans in order to promote itself. There are typically two methods that SysAntivirus will be advertised on your computer. The first method is when a user is browsing the web and receives a pop-up stating that there computer is infected and that they should run an online anti-malware scanner to check for malware. Regardless of the option they select in the pop-up, they will be brought to a page that displays an advertisement in the form of an online malware scanner. Once the advertisement is finished, it will then state that your computer is infected and that you should install SysAntivirus2009 in order to protect yourself. It is important to remember that this is just an advertisement and has no way of know what is running on your computer. The second method that you may see ads for SysAntivirus is if your computer is infected with certain Trojans that display security alerts stating that you are infected and that you should install SysAntivirus to protect yourself.

Once SysAntivirus is installed on your computer it will be configured to start automatically when you boot your computer and log into Windows. Once running, the program will automatically scan your computer and list numerous infections, which cannot be removed until you purchase the software. These infections, though, are all fake and are only being shown to scare you into purchasing the software. In reality, the only infection you have is the SysAntivirus program and the Trojans that installed it.

  • Internet Explorer will be hijacked so that when you are browsing the web you will intermittently be shown a page stating that your computer is infected and prompting you to get protection. Obviously, if you click the links on the page, it will try to sell you SysAntivirus 2009. The text of this hijack is:

Insecure Internet activity. Threat of virus attack!

Due to insecure Internet browsing your PC can easily <sic> You may be infected with viruses, worms and trojans without your knowledge, which can lead to system slowdowns, freezes and crashes.
Unprotected Internet browsing can result in your personal information being revealed without your knowledge or permission.
To get full advanced real-time protection for PC and Internet activity, register SysAntivirus 2009.
  • A fake Windows Security Center stating that Windows recommends you purchase SysAntivirus.

  • Alerts stating that your computer is under attack and if you wish to block the attack. If you select Yes, it prompts you to purchase SysAntivirus.

  • An alert when you try to download a file stating that the download could be infected.

  2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

  3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

  4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.

  5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.

  6. MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

    MalwareBytes Scan Results

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

  12. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

  13. You can now exit the MBAM program.

Your computer should now be free of the SysAntivirus2009 program. If your current anti-virus solution let this infection through, you may want to consider purchasing the PRO version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to protect against these types of threats in the future.

If you are still having problems with your computer after completing these instructions, then please follow the steps outlined in the topic linked below:
