BleepingComputer.com: Mepis/firefox

I have Mephis 6.5 as my only OS on my hard drive. The version
of Firefox is 2.0..Is there a way to update it? Same holds true
for Open Office. I believe I have to wait for Mepis to come up with
an update but not sure if I can just do it myself.

I'm using swiftfox 2.0.0.4 on my kubuntu system. Fell in love with it. (Its a faster version of firefox). I usually like to wait for the distro to put it in the repos before I update. are you using the Ubuntu repos along with the mepis ones?

I guess the answer would be yes. As far as I can tell
Mepis uses lots of Ubuntu things...If I look at the repos
I see many items that say Ubuntu...

Thanks for all the info guys. Mepis had a big update via synaptic
a couple of days ago and I now have the latest version of Firefox.
I didn't think that would happen.....FWIW, apparently they want to
stick to the Open Office 2.0 version for now. I don't know if that will
be an auto update in the future or not....I'm going to try your suggestions
on my own....I'll keep you informed.......thanks again.

By the way, I've noticed that most people in this forum use Ubuntu rather
than Mepis. Is there a good reason for that or just a preference?

The latest version of OO.o is 2.2.1. Only minor changes have been made to 2.0 as far as functionality, and a few minor bugs have been fixed. Although there have been some security patches since 2.0, these are not significant if you are a careful user. Hopefully OO.o will soon be able to offer incremental security patches instead of making users do a complete install of the later version.

I personally have not tried Mepis (yet, but it is on my list) and would say that if you are happy stay where you are. if your bored try the Ubuntu Live CD, or the Fedora 7 Live DVD or any other distro you see that you think you might like (there is one I will suggest just for a change of pace with the GUI its called Symphony OS and while buggy is very differant from the other GUIs GNOME and KDE it uses Enlightenment, I think)

Try any distro you chose you will find some you hate and maybe one you love more then your current one.

definitely about personality / community / individual freedom rather than anything technical. vector linux is based on slackware but i saw a quote that said "vector; a better slackware than slackware". also i saw a quote that said ubuntu is a better debian than debian and linuxmint is a better ubuntu than ubuntu. me? i like mandriva/kde.
