Excel problem Non recognizable format

I was working on an Excel spreadsheet, and the power died on my laptop as I was saving changes. Now when I powered back up, the file says it is "Not a recognizable format'

Any reason why this happened, and can I recover my data?

Have you tried the excel file on another machine?
