You can use both an image, and text, as long as they comply with the forum rules.
1. To add text

One way to do this, is from your Profile page.
There are a few ways, to get to your Profile page:
Clicking your Profile image, at the top, right, of any page
Clicking your Username, at the top, right, of any page
Clicking the dropdown arrow next to your Username, at the top, right of any page, and selecting My Profile
Once on your Profile page, near the top on the right, click the Edit My Profile button.
This will take you to the Your Options page.
On the left, select Change Signature.
In the open text box, type in the information you want to be displayed in your Sig.
When you have it the way you want it, click the Save Changes button at the bottom.

You can also click the dropdown arrow next to your Username, at the top, right of any page, and select My Settings.
This will take you to the Your Options page.
Click the Profile tab.
On the left, select Change Signature.
In the open text box, type in the information you want to be displayed in your Sig.
When you have it the way you want it, click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
Note:
Signatures are limited to 5 lines, or 2000 characters, whichever comes first.
If your signature is larger than the allotted size given, or deemed unacceptable, you will be requested to adjust your signature.
Failure to comply, will result in the removal of your signature.
2. To add an image
The image you use for your sig, has to be hosted off-site (image hosting site, personal web site, etc.)

A Sig image can either be static, or animated..
The directions for adding an image are basically the same, as for adding text.
Instead of typing text into the text field, you'll add a link to your hosted image using image tags.
[img]your image URL[/img]Once complete, click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
Note:
You are allowed only one image, in your signature.
Images can be no larger than, 500 pixels wide X 90 pixels high.
If you have more than one image, you will be requested to remove one.
If this is not done in a timely manner, the staff has the right to modify your signature, to comply with these rules.
Before doing any of this, it's a good idea to clear your browser's cache (Firefox), or your Temporary Internet Files (IE).
Failing to do so, sometimes prevents you from being able to see the changes, immediately.
