Loss Of Video Signal

Hello,

I have a hp d530 slimtower 2.4ghz. After a few minutes of running the computer I lose the video signal. The computer doesn't turn off but the video signal is lost. I am using the on board video output. I tried installing a pci video card but the same problem occurs. Anyone out there know what could be at the root of this problem. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

How do you do that? I assumed that as the computer was still powered on( i.e. you can still hear the cooling fan running and power light is still on) it had not overheated, but obviously I could be wrong. How do I check for this? And how do I fix an overheating problem? More powerful cooling sink and fan?

it might not be the cpu overheating but the northbridge chipset? if a pci vid card is doing the same thing tho??

if heat is the problem cleaning case fan and/or power supply fan(often cooling critical in book pc's) and having the whole unit
get more fresh cool air will tell the story

Hi Chewey and Acklan,

Thanks for all your help. I have previously cleaned off the heatsink and given the inside a good vacuuming. So I think the problem might be the northbridge chipset as you mentioned. Is there anything I can do to fix this or do I need a new motherboard?

Hello Chewy,

I have the Ultra-slim Desktop model. I haven't looked at the bios temp yet as I have never done that. I will google that and try to figure out how to do it and post the results.

Hello Chewy,

Here are the results of what I did. I did two things:

1) I placed a temperature probe (uei multimeter) beside(probe in direct contact with side of chip) the cpu. I loss video signal at various temps once at 38 Celcius and also at 42C. This is nowhere near the 72C Maximum Case Temp as listed on Intel spec sheet.

2) I downloaded and installed Everest Home Edition and it said the motherboard temp was 34 C prior to losing video signal. I did this a second time and loss video at 30C.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency here. Is there anything else I can do?

My voltage values seem ok too. Should I throw in towel and buy new motherboard or would you suggest something else?

boot into safe mode and see if it does it, might indicate a driver issue if it is ok
