When I download P2P software such as Limewire and Soulseek I lose my internet connection. This means having to uninstall the program or reset the router. I have McAfee security and my Windows Firewall is disabled. Can anyone advise how I can get the software and keep the internet connection?? It is very frustrating as I was able to use these programs OK with my old XP pc.

I'm curious -
are you able to download similar sized files from other sites?

Yes I have not downloaded many but I have downloaded Memories on TV which is 18Mb. I also had a problem opening a mpg attachment in hotmail which also disconnected me and I had to reset the router (voyager 210). I believe it is something to do with Vista thinking that the downloads are "problem" files and therefore stops the internet connection altogether! Can it really be that "smart"?

Yes it can; most of those type programs come bundled with programs such as newdotnet, which hijack the network connection.

Thanks, oldf@rt. So does that mean I can't use them, or more importantly should never be using them anyway for security reasons?

There are other programs that are clean, but ones that contain bundled adware especially newdot net should not be used. I have yet to find a machine with P2P software on it that did not have malware. check this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/r...tup_s-3687.html
