I saw 3 more topics regarding the same question
let us rather, refer to this one instead
Platform:Windows NT / 98 / 2000 / Me

Well sorry,im afraid it is not compatible with XP looking at the system requirements
But...However i tried installing some softwares that work even if they don't list XP as compatible

You could try that if it doesn't work on XP.

I once had a similar question about compatibility, but with a different program.
I right clicked on the .exe file of the program and changed the compatibility to an older version of windows and it worked.
Maybe it won't be the same for you, who knows.
I just thought i'd let you know, see if it helps.

Do I need to make a system restore point before I try it?

There are no issues between PS 6.0 or 6.01 (you should upgrade to 6.01 as it fixes issues) and Windows XP SP2. I have it at home and at work and have had zero issues with it ever. I have run PS 6.01 on an old HP with 256Mb ram and a 1.73 ghz processor running WinXP SP2, and have run PS 6.01 on a custom built machine with a P4 3.06 with HT, 2Gb ram running Windows XP SP2.
As a matter of fact, I was using Photoshop 6.01 on Windows XP SP2 earlier this morning!
