Cant Connect Dlink Modem To Windows Xp

I had a very frustrating night trying to connect a D-Link DSL-200 modem to a Windows XP machine via a USB connector.

I attached the modem, and fired up the driver software.

The questions are extremely tecchy and extremely confusing, however, I selected PPPoA as it said in the readme file that this was the most common one for Australia.

After going through the setup process, what was really frustrating was that Windows XP would not list the modems in 'modems' in Control Panel.
Yet, everytime I tried to restart the installation software, it said I'd already installed the modem!

I restarted Xp, but the same result: the modem did not appear.

Does anyone have any tips: is this modem compatible with Win XP?

"After the configuration and installation completed, go to Control Panel > Network Connections. You should see new D-Link PPP Connection icon. Double-click on it and enter your username and password. Under phone number enter 8,35 (for Australia) or 0,100 (for New Zealand). Click on Connect. "

Did you see anything under Network Connections in the Control Panel?

I don't know if it means anything. You used to have to install the software first and then the hardware
