Recently, my apartment was broken into, and my desktop was stolen. Though this is depressing and hard to go through, I am going to take this opportunity to get a laptop. I want to spend around 900 dollars. I am a student, and want this laptop to last me 3 years or so. I do a lot of picture taking and sending, and some music downloading. Other than that I will use it for school work, and probably AIM as well. Can anyone guide me in a great direction? IBM thinkpad? Gateway? Dell? Vaio? What specs should I look for? Thank you!!

Hp are great bang for the buck and reliable. Plus they offer all the latest goodies.
Go to hp.com and hit notebooks then customize one.
You can even get ones with 17 inch widescreens.
900 bucks should take your pretty far for what you need to do.
Even the MIN specs would do fine for you. If you need Hard drive space HP offers dual 150gb hd's I think for one of their laptops!

I would suggest a quick trip to best buy and look around. For what you need you could get something really decent for 900 bucks.
I have a Acer Aspire 5043 that cost me 910 dollars with tax (I live in Canada gotta love the 14 percent sales tax) Anyways it's got a good processor for what you need but the hardrive is only 60 gigs. What you could do is get an external hard drive.
Up to date I haven't had any big problems and I am handy with computers so getting the minor stuff out of the way was ok but I don't think Acer tech support is any good...
