That is correct. You must have ONE Firewall and ONE AntiVirus only. Then you can have as much antispyware as you are comfortable with, and your system will handle. You will get varying advice on this matter so you try various things and go with what works for you.

Rowal, though I know you are only to have one anti-virus program, I also read that sometimes that program can miss something and think that some members run a online anti-virus as well as their usual one. Is this advisable? I have the free avast one and wonder if it is enough along side my windows firewall and aol spyware. As this original post suggests, I am not experienced enough to run programs which change registry etc and would like to keep it simple, like myself...

I personally keep Tea-timer on and advise to do so, although it is not needed it is a handy tool.

Hi sorry I never saw your post earlier. I have disabled the teatimer as suggested, for now anyway until I understand it a little more. I haven't looked yet at the start up you mentioned but wondered if it is the same as when I press contol/Alt/delete and the box comes up showing what is running... mind you, even then I'm not sure if said program should or shouldn't run....so just best leave well alone.

Once again I'd like to thank everyone for their help but think I better leave this thread now or I might get into trouble for treating it like a chat room...hehehe

I'll wait to see the Tutorial for Dummies on Registy and that should sort me out

Yes, I think it is advisable to run an online scan from time to time. I personally use the Housecall online scan by Trend Micro, but there are other good ones out there.

..... just have a browse in the option of 'Start Up' programmes on your way there.

That will contain a list of the programmes that start up when you PC does, these are there because they place themselves in the start up of your registry, these listed items are what Tea-timer was popping up and warning you about. Now most in there will have ome strange name or a combination of letters or digits, and will not make any sense to you, but open up google and type each one in one by one and do a search. You will find many results pop up for websites that offer you the answer as to what the item is and what it is needed for. You will tend to find this will give you the answer to knowing if your entry is safe or not.

Or, to prevent from having to search through, potentially, hundreds of Google results, you can use the 3 tabs (Startup List, Uninstall List, and File Database), located at the top of this page, to search your entries.
If you don't find an answer there, then do a Google search.

Also, in Spybot's System Startup that graveangel mentioned, you can find out some additional information, on most of the programs listed there, by highlighting the entry (single click), then clicking on the set of double arrows on the far right.
This will open a box, giving information on the selected entry, along with suggestions of whether the program can be disabled, or not.
If there's no information on the entry, you can check it with one of the 3 tads located at the top of the forum page.
If still, no information is found, go to Google.
