I have found it best if you don't have many shortct icons on your desktop.
i found that my pc loaded faster without so many i only have four icons.
i you really need certain icons just have your icons that you really use alot there.
it does help some people don't notice but some will.

I don't have any icons on my desktop, I use the Quicklaunch tool bar for the programs I use a lot and the Desktop tool bar for access to the Recycle Bin and My Computer.

Great tip Izzy. Especially for those who have an abundance of icons.

Ronbo, I have a question. A couple of months ago, my quick launch items disappeared on my taskbar. Any idea where they went or how to get them back?

You should be able to get the quicklaunch toolbar to show by right clicking on any open space on you taskbar, going to toolbars and selecting quicklaunch. Or by right clicking the taskbar, selecting properties and putting a check mark in Show Quick Launch. If this doesn't work, let me know.
The actual folder itself is located in C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer (this is with Win XP Pro).

It says "cannot create toolbar" using right click, toolbars, Quick launch.
The second option I don't have in mine.
Third, I don't have XP, I have ME.
Wonder what made this happen, though.

AdAware may have something to do with it. Read this at the Lavasoft Support Forum. It talks about XP/2000 but could well apply to ME.

Izzy, I use WinXP Pro.

I got the wallpaper from this site: http://skinartistry.com/plug.php?p=gallery

The calender is free and comes from here: http://www.ipi.fi/~rainy/index.php?pn=proj...ject=rainlendar

another tip...

when you install programs some will have the option to add an icon to desktop, which you can untick if you don't want it there, same with a quick launch.

Yes, and when you install programs
and have multiple partitions/drives
and do not want them on your primary OS drive
(to keep it free of clutter & make it easier to regulate/defrag)
ALWAYS browse for an alternative location.

This will sometimes mean:
  • You need to make a folder in your "alternative" Program Files location
  • You need to understand whether or not the program needs to be on the primary drive
  • (few if any do)
The result of your effort will be a clearer picture of what is happening on your PC.
An easier & faster defrag all around.
Better situation for windows to deal with it's operational requirements, particularly on boot initialization.

Phawgg,

if i just say came home now with a new computer and it had loads of software with it, how would i install it...

Say Windows XP already installed (just say it one of those annoying 4 disc recovery cd's you normally get with ACER, COMPAQ, HP etc)

i had

Office
Norton
Canon printer (file name is MultiPASS Suite - ImageCLASS)
Imitation (cd/DVD label maker)
PowerDVD (DVD player)

Quicktime
ITunes
Nero
HiJackThis
DVD Shrink
DVDFab Gold
Spybot

what would be the best way to install them?

An excellent question, and one that deserves a good answer.

My answer will not be totally good.

Here is why:
  • Unless you have two drives, you cannot do it -or-
  • If you have one drive, with two or more partitions, you can. *
  • Your new computer may differ from my new computer in several ways:
  • One of them is fundamental...
  • I have a Microsoft Windows OS CD.
  • You may or may not, many systems sold build in a partition exclusively for fresh windows OS files in duplicate. No reload CD available.
  • Each manufacturer has different hoops you jump through to achieve a fresh system.
  • If you have two HDs, one will be "automatically" non-primary.
  • You can run nearly anything on it and not foul up the OS.
  • conversely, leaving the OS to reside on your primary partition/drive seems to mean it doesn't get fouled up as easy.
  • Having two HDs generally means you can "play around" with one, partitioning it and such, without interfering with the boot drive (and/or partition of it)
  • That can not always be done with a single drive, however.
* but you are limited as to what you can uninstall & re-install where you want it

Details vary in the same way that they do in individual HJT logs.
One PC at a time, and the problems can be met with research and/or trial & error.
I know of no other way, safely.

So becuase i don't have an actual WIndpws CD could i just purchase a professional XP disc in upgrade XP Home, that way i would have an actual windows CD?

can you actually have 2 drives?

you could have 2X 260GB hardrives which means you have 520GB of space right? (well less cause you gotta have Windows)
but trouble would be it would be slower? or would you get a fast drive or something?
