My father recently purchased a new HP PAVILION A1710N with Vista Home Premium on it. He came home after a long weekend, which he left his computer on, to find BSOD with this error: System Checksum does not equal computer checksum. the unit is not rebooting just displays this message and will not start up windows.

He didn't get any discs with the new cpu and he didn't create the system disks that it urged him to do after he began to use it.

I've tried to search for this same error and have been able to find any solutions. We'd appreciated anyones assistance.

thanks,

Jamie

He could try accessing the BIOS and restore system to default settings. If this is new and under warranty, I'd be contacting HP

Here's the 2 "checksum" errors that I was able to locate:
0x0000008B: MBR_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH: http://www.osronline.com/ddkx/ddtools/bccodes_6hev.htm
0xC0000221: STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH: http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x221

The first one is usually indicative of a virus infection, the second is usually a software issue.

Have you tried a system recovery by pressing F11 when the system first starts to boot? There "should" be a prompt on the screen for when to press F11, but I've seen several HP's without it recently.

Have you tried to get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 just before Windows starts to load (if possible with the BSOD).

Other options are to borrow a system restore disk from another, similar computer to see if it'll work - or purchasing one from HP. It'll be about $16 (US) from this HP link: https://warp2.external.hp.com/driver/dr_cou...ng=en&cc=us
