Cannot Install Windows Vista Or Any Other Os another problem on my list

I have installed windows xp on a new computer temporarily, it started to crash a lot to driver issues,windows xp would not even start up after that i did not bother with it because i was going to install vista . When i put the vista disc in it starts up fine and starts loading some files it goes to some kind of startup screen then does nothing i waited for around 5-10 minutes did i do anything wrong? do i need to format my hard drives if so how.
