I need to be able to run CHKDSK at boot up so that I can run a disk defrag. For some reason it by passes it altogether and until I can do this, I can't defrag my hd. BTW, I've thought and tried every reasonable common option I can think of. Actually this transpired when I set Diskeeper to run the CHKDSK and a defrag at boot up. I unchecked for Diskeeper to run the CHKDSK and defrag at boot up, but to no avail.

Any knowledgeable assistance would be an invaluable help!

Thanks.

What version operating system are you using? If XP do this:

Open My Computer
Right-click on the hard disk you wish to work with
Select Properties
Go to the Tools tab
Under Error-checking, click Check Now...
Check the second box or both if you like
It should tell you it has to reboot to check them
Specify that you would like it to check on next startup

Did that. [BTW, I've thought and tried every reasonable common option I can think of.]

The problem appears to be that when it is supposed to run when the system / windows reboots - it doesn't! That is what is so unusual, and I can't figure it out!

Thanks!

(The system reboots, CHKDSK won't run. Sorry, I'm at work and I'm trying to do this in a hurry. Are there any other options on how I can approach this?

Thanks!

Do you get any messages? maybe something like this:

Quote

Cannot open volume for direct access.
The type of the file system is NTFS.
IFSUTIL: Can't open drive. Status returned = c0000043.
Windows has finished checking the disk.
