Help
I dont know much about computers and I just finished up with someone on this forum that did a wonerful job protecting my computer. Now what I need is a remote desktop so when I am on teh road or in other offices I can tap into my computer from anywhere. I would like to save the link to one of my web based emails and tap in when I need to. Or any other way someone could suggest. I am a mortgage banker so I have alot of confidential info on my computer that cannot be compromised. Can anyone point me in the right direction or walk me through this?

Well, with RDC (remote desktop connection) it is a bit difficult. You could use a program like PC anywhere, or you could connect onto your modem/router and open port 3389, and point that to your computers IP address. The only problem is, if you have residential internet service, it will be hard because your WAN (Wide area network) IP addy will change every restart of the modem, and usually after 1 whole month. You could tell someone at your home to go to http://whatismyip.com/ to get the addy, contact me on yahoo messanger (Gavinseabrook2004@yahoo.com), and i will try to help you.

you could use a DDNS (dynamic DNS) service such as www.no-ip.com to give your network a 'name' on the internet (example, mine is : http://tylerhome.myvnc.com), along with Gavin's suggestion on forwarding the ports used for RDC.
Personally, I use SSH to connect to my desktop, then have a tunnel to a VNC (another remote desktop utility) connection, so that it is entirely encrypted over the internet. There's a good how-to on that setup at:

also, there isn't really a 'safe' method of doing this. anytime you have an open port in your firewall/router, it is a possibility that someone could use it for malicious purposes. The fact that it is a home system, with a dynamic address, helps to make it less of a risk, but it is not inherently risk-free.

Wow thats exactly what I want to do but the step by step process is still too advanced for me and Im not understanding the instructions. Is there anywhere on this site that I can ask someone to walk me through it like they walked me through cleaning my computer? Blender did an amazing job on that.
