If a HDD quits working and is not recgnized at boot, try the following procedure to recover the data:
1- Remove drive from System and install in a USB External housing.
2- Connect to another computer and see if it shows in "MY Computer". If it doesn't remove HDD and wrap it in Antiistatic plastic and place in freezer for several hours.
3- Remove the HDD from the freezer and place it back in the USB External HDD enclosure. Open "My Computer" and look for the External Drive. It may or may not work. I have used this method several times to recover data.
Note: I do a lot of PC support so I have a spare system for just troubleshooting hardware, ect. This article is based on Windows XPSP2.
