Disk Defrag Looking for a good freeware one

I'm looking for a good freeware disk defrag application for XP. I've tried Auslogics and while it does a fairly good job of defragging files it doesn't compact them very well. And I'm not very happy with the one built into windows. Any suggestions?

I had used Diskeeper Lite before, I now use O&O Defrag. You can download it free from here.

dc3, the link you provided for O&O Defrag states that it's shareware, not freeware. Do you know what the trial period is?

I use Auslogics, noticed the same thing that it doesn't compact the files, so I use it to defrag, then use the windows one to compact. Its all free, and my HDD (320gb) is defragged and compacted within 10 mins now

Have you checked the Bleeping Computer list of freeware? This defrag program was listed there, SpeeDefrag 4.1

I tried out SpeeDefrag last night and didn't think it was any better than AusLogics.

The problem I have is that there are a few large movie files (approx. 700MB each) on my HDD that none of the defrag utilities I've tried will touch - they all skip these files. I have plenty of free space on the HDD and I don't understand why they don't defrag these large files.

I might give Diskeeper Lite a try tonight to see how it goes.

I found another defrag tool, it looks good but is in beta at the moment. I tried it anyway it looks quite good.

My 2cts:

ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

I have ERUNT installed on my computer and use it often; however, it doesn't defrag your HDD.

Certain Defrag programs ignore certain file extentions unless configures to scan those files extentions. Have you checked to make sure the files you want scanned are included in the list of files scanned?

You should download "Power Defragmenter GUI 2.0.125" from the site above.

Put "Power Defragmenter GUI.exe" and "Contig.exe" in the same folder.
And then execute "Defragmenter GUI.exe."
If you want to defrag c: drive, I recommend to select the "PowerMode™ Disk Defragmentation:"
