I have been looking for a registry cleaner that works and is really free. Not just a scan or fixes a few of the hits and then you have to pay. A truly free scan and fix program. Or is there something in MSN that does it??

Look under the section called:
"Free up hard drive space"
Most people use ccleaner. It is safe and easy to use.

I use Regsupreme in aggressive mode, immediately after a new installation. After that I only manually edit out any superfluous programs which I may have been trying. The only reason for this is that most uninstall programs leave dirty traces behind. There is an unnoticeably memory and/or speed penalty, if this rubbish is left in the reg files, so to wish to clean those files is a matter of personal choice. In fact, it can sometimes , but not often, be a dangerpus mistake. For expediency, the resident regclean is good enough.

Provided you allways make a backup before cleaning the registry.

Quote

Download install and update Ccleaner
After installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back ups
Now Start up in safe mode
Do two runs

1) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup.
This will be stored, as a default, in My documents.
2) Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.
Here are the basic guidelines. However I urge you to be carefull what you delete from the registry and investigate every single line prior to deleting it.

Automated registry cleaners can be very dangerous to use, and unless you are somewhat computer literate and review each and every candidated file, you can do serious harm to either the operating system or to applications on your hard drive. Balancing the potential problems of these cleaners against the minimal potential improvement in how the computer functions, using them is very moot.

Talk about tweaking the registry always makes me very nervous. If you insist on modifing your registry you need to back it up.
This is a very good registry backup program. ERUNT
I am only speaking for myself, but in this situation if it is not broke do not fix it. You can do unrepairable damage to your Operating System tinkering with your registry.

Not only should you backup your registry, but you should know how to restore it if you can't get into Windows at all. It'll save you a lot of grief if you get a bit of knowledge and a couple of free programs before you need them.
