is this a windows XP easter egg? after you do that you see star wars movie played out in ASCII art... its pretty cool! ---- Load up notepad. Type "bush hid the facts" (or any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo) save the document, any name works. Close it. Open it again. what you open isn't what you typed. ---- In any folder, try to create a folder called 'con' or 'Con'. It won't work. Windows just un-renames the file or puts up an error saying it already exists. ----- go to run and type "oobe" without quote marks ("") and you hear some cool music you never installed in the computer! and its not one of the sample songs that comes with windows media player do you have any others to share? is this a windows XP easter egg? after you do that you see star wars movie played out in ASCII art... its pretty cool! This one is not an "easter egg". What is happening is, you are utilizing a telnet session to view the creation of Simon Jansen. It can also be a java app, but in this case you are using telnet. "Bush hid the facts" isn't an easter egg either. It's a good-ol' fashioned glitch.
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/bush-hid-the-facts-notepad.html This explains it. It also works for stuff like "Bill fed the goats" and "hhhh hhh hhh hhhhh". ___ The "Com" folder is for programming too. You can't name a folder CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN, NUL, and a few others. They're simply port locations and Windows would get confused. -------------------- ![]() |

what about this one tho?
QUOTE In any folder, try to create a folder called 'con' or 'Con'. It won't work. Windows just un-renames the file or puts up an error saying it already exists.

It's a windows reserved filename.
CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9 are all reserved filenames and you can't use them to create a file or folder. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247.aspx -------------------- Derfram

Howdy, Clock is an .avi file stored in the \WINDOWS\system32\ or the \WINDOWS\ folder (once again caught in linux land with an XP thread) and can be called by the command line because it is in system environment path much the same way as notepad.exe and telnet.exe. Same deal with oobe for me arcman, it too (the folder) is in the same path.Try userinit.exe and you will see how many malware apps can make a call to launch explorer although this action is usually hidden (HWND). Malware writers have all the good eggs i think.......
Good finds though Cheers, Lucent. -------------------- ![]() Special thanks to efizzer for the signature |

oobe is the way you can register windows, like if your installing it from a demo disk or something. Its the msoobe.exe
I think the music might be the 'title.wma' aka 'windows welcome music'. Its there in my distribution on windows xp home sp2 anyway. Not sure if its for all winxp's. And I think this music is connected to registering windows in some way. There are also some preinstalled music that you can find with the windows media player search. Like the 'Highway blues' and 'symphony no. 9'. This post has been edited by nforce: Feb 23 2007, 04:21 PM |

So really, all the party poopers pointed out that Windows doesn't have eggs, just glitches, reserved names of ports, and access to some really really bored guy's files. Am I correct?
Fun Fact: OOBE stands for (in Windows terms) Out Of Box Experience, similar to Out Of Body Experience, as Amazing Andrew said. the "Title.wma" music is the music you hear after installing Windows and are setting up your network and user names. Provided Windows already installed drivers for your sound card.

An easter egg that I've heard of is in Minesweeper.(the standard windows game)
first reset your score. Then you have to beat each difficulty level. After you beat each one instead of putting in your name for a high score type in "WRAPFIELD" instead. (no quotes) After completing this right -click the reset button (the little smiley face) This should give you an advanced minesweeper mode where the mine proximity readings near the edge continue from the opposite side of the map as well. |
