thus, you will need a PCI-E card, and i would suggest a card with at least 128mb onboard memory, preferably 256mb. i don't know your budget, but here are a few ideas. ATI- Radeon X1950GT, Radeon X1600 Pro nVidia- GeForce 7600GT, GeForce 7300GT i have gotten a lot of feedback that, for the money, the GeForce 7600GT is the best bargain. hope this helps. salud bg04 -------------------- "Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal." -Albert Camus

Sorry for the delayed response, but sometimes people on here get so busy. Ok, as far as your potential build is concerned, everything is in order except for your DVD drive. It is supported by Xp/2000, but vista is not confirmed. Though I wouldn't doubt that it will work, I would look for one that is confirmed to work with vista. Most devices connected to the MB with an IDE cable run off of basic drivers in the OS. Meaning that it will have a generic driver that will make any kind of DVD drive you plug in, seem like the previous one that was in there.
The ONLY reason that drive may not work, is because they might not have Vista drivers yet. Like I said, check around for another first to be safe. Now, as far as building the machine. You want to make sure that your PSU is 24-pin ATX. If not, you're going to be in trouble. There are mATX which are usually standard among OEM machines (Dell,HP,Compaq, etc), and then ATX, which a lot of do it yourselfers use. If your PSU is only 20 pin, but does support ATX, you can get an adapter to make it a 20+4 pin, essentially making it 24 pin. Other than that, everything is ready to go it looks like. Do not get that 6200! Not that its a bad card, but you could do better and it will use up some of your computers ram (says 64mb of onboard vram so it will use up 192mb of your systems ram). That 1600 pro looks good, but I would suggest looking around a bit more. I notice your trying to go for cheaper cards. That's alright, but even something in the 30$ prices range isn't going to be good. What you got to think of too is with newer games coming out there going to require more, so if you buy a cheaper graphics card now you might need to buy another one sooner for newer games then if you were too just put a little bit more money into it now (run-on sentences FTW!). Well I guess that x1600 pro would be fine if your just playing counter strike or other games like it. Hope this helps!

The x1600 pro is also a bad idea. It is just an x1300XT with delusions of grandeur. The only difference between them is that the x1600 pro has a different name and a higher price-tag, hardware vise they are the same card.

PSU is a power supply unit, Sorry. Im used to abbreviating it.
And I was referring to OEM machines. Those cases are mATX. Most cases that are for homebuilt machines I believe are just standard ATX. And yes, buy a full copy of vista. I hate this upgrade stuff. |
