Member Group: Members Posts: 49 Joined: 6-December 04 Member No.: 6,533	I am trying to install software to run with a ADSL modem/Router..But that aint really important. whenever I try and run the installation program from cd I get the error "This file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and microsoft Windows applications. Click close to terminate" Then get the choise of close or ignore and both close the program. I also tried downloading the program in case the cd was corrupt but the exact same error occured. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. need to run this program. Thanks in advance Tom.

Turns out its is my NTVDM subsystem as I have ran command.com (points 1 and 2 in the above link) and the error I reported above comes up. Problem is I dont understand the instructions on how to mend it...Can someone help me by giving me a step-by-step how to do it/ how to follow the instructions given at this link as I am not very computery. Thanks very much Tom

Voted most likely Group: Members Posts: 3,674 Joined: 19-September 04 From: Collingwood, Ontario, Canada Member No.: 2,883	They want you to edit config.nt and autoexec.nt if there is anything other than the following in them: Config.nt --------- dos=high, umb device=%SystemRoot%\System32\Himem.sys files=20 Autoexec.nt ----------- lh %SystemRoot%\System32\Mscdexnt.exe lh %SystemRoot%\System32\Redir lh %SystemRoot%\System32\Dosx lh %SystemRoot%\System32\Nw16 (only if CSNW is installed) lh %SystemRoot%\System32\Vwipxspx (only if CSNW is installed) Click the Start button, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type command.com, and then click OK. 3. type in edit config.nt and press enter. This should show that file. 4. Type in edit autoexec.nt and press enter. This should show that file. To do edit these I'll make an example. Say your config.nt looks like this instead of the above: Config.nt --------- dos=high, umb device=%SystemRoot%\System32\Himem.sys device=%SystemRoot%\System32\Emm386.exe files=20 The third line should not be there so you would type rem with a space to make it look like: Config.nt --------- dos=high, umb device=%SystemRoot%\System32\Himem.sys rem device=%SystemRoot%\System32\Emm386.exe files=20 This will cause windows to ignore that line. You "rem" it out. If you can copy your config.nt and autoexec.nt files in here we can show you what to do. BTW, you will not see %SystemRoot% as that is an example. Can you give some details on your system (CPU, MB) and the Modem/Router. My computer is a edion something or toher, only a year or 2 old. My adsl mode/ router is an ADSL Home station from site com with 1 USB port, connectd to my computer for internet and 4 ethernet ports for networking. The software that needs installing is to configure the modem to my ISP I think. Thanks for the help I will get back once I have tried the stages above. Cheers Tom

Ive used CMD to try and edit the confg.nt and autoexec files, so I type edit config.nt and press enter as Leurgy said and I get the same error message that I am trying to get rid of.."This file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Windows applications click close to terminate." Duno what the hells wrong with my computer but your help is appreciated and I would be very glad if you could help me sort this problem. Thanks Tom

There is a line in autoexec.nt that needs to be "remmed out". Try this: Click Start. Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Now go to Start>Search>Search files and folders and search for autoexec.nt. Right click on that file and choose edit or open with. Open with Notepad if you have to. C:\Windows\Repair\autoexec.nt which when opened with notepad gives.... "[I]@echo off REM AUTOEXEC.BAT is not used to initialize the MS-DOS environment. REM AUTOEXEC.NT is used to initialize the MS-DOS environment unless a REM different startup file is specified in an application's PIF. REM Install CD ROM extensions lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe) lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir REM Install DPMI support lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx REM The following line enables Sound Blaster 2.0 support on NTVDM. REM The command for setting the BLASTER environment is as follows: REM SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 REM where: REM A specifies the sound blaster's base I/O port REM I specifies the interrupt request line REM D specifies the 8-bit DMA channel REM P specifies the MPU-401 base I/O port REM T specifies the type of sound blaster card REM 1 - Sound Blaster 1.5 REM 2 - Sound Blaster Pro I REM 3 - Sound Blaster 2.0 REM 4 - Sound Blaster Pro II REM 6 - SOund Blaster 16/AWE 32/32/64 REM REM The default value is A220 I5 D1 T3 and P330. If any of the switches is REM left unspecified, the default value will be used. For example: REM SET BLASTER=A0[/I]" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And the other file is C:\Windows\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT_ A when opened with notepad gives loads of random symbols and numbers..presumably because it can't be opened with notepad properly. Duno wether this is what you were expecting...It sure means nothing to me though. Tom

I suggest printing out the instructions you decide to try that way ya don't fergit a step.
