Recently my browser doesn't play the sound when playing a video. It doesn't matter if it's flash, adds or whatever. When researching this I have noticed 2 weird things. 1) the sound icon has disappeared from the process bar and 2) in Control Panel/Sound/Sound units under MIDI-player the field is empty, I can choose Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, but when I open the sound properties again the field is empty again.

Other relevant info: Windows XP, IE 6.0, all other sound units work fine: WMP, Itunes and so on (off course playing local sound files or movies)

I hope you can help me

Addition: I have just found out that Skype doesn't work either. It will not let me make calls because there is problems with my sound unit. I live abroad so Skype and the Internet are my life lines!
