Hi,

I've downloaded the above files, but can't seem to figure out how to open them. Windows does not recognize the file extension (I think it said), so it wouldn't open it. Is there another program that I can use to open them and install them?

Thanks,

Eagle7

Hi Orangeblossom,

The Terrorist75 suggested downloading the above files (post #7) to be able to stop the updater portion of my Adobe Reader from being such a problem, thereby being able to keep using Adobe with no hassle. There are four small files to do this, but once I downloaded and tried to open them, I get a dialog box that says Windows doesn't recognize the file extension so it won't open them. Any ideas? I haven't yet opened the Foxitreader that I downloaded, guess I just really don't know what I should do. Thanks for putting up with a semi newbie.

Regards,

Eagle7

I'm afraid I'm clueless concerning the files TheTerrorist_75 told you about.

Hmm. I have a different idea for stopping the auto-starting of Adobe Reader.

There is a program I use to control my startups. You can find it here along with directions for how to use it: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

If you decide you want to disable more start-ups than just the Adobe Reader, check out the file names in the Start-up database here on BC before disabling them.

To all who've been helping me,

Guess what? I appeared to have fixed my problem! YAY. Recalling that my Adobe Photoshop has a "repair installation" feature, I poked around Reader and found one in the "Help" drop down menu. This process took a whole minute to run, and seems to have fixed the problem. To try it out, I subsequently downloaded half a dozen different files to Reader of various page lengths, 1 to 5 pages. Operations went without a hitch. Could it have been that simple?

To Orangeblossom,

Thanks for your start up program suggestion. That got me to thinking. I use "WinPatrol", the Plus edition. That has a "Start Up" part of it's program. While I didn't see Adobe Updater there, and I even ticked the box to show hidden ones, I did find a few other programs that I went ahead and disabled. Thanks so much for all your help on this one.

Regards,

Eagle7

Eagle7,
If you want to know exactly what is starting on your computer through numerous mechanisms then check out this tool http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/autoruns.mspx
It is a little complex at first but does give you an idea of just how many things are loaded by windows.
checkout the logon tab for starters.
