As for fixing the problems we have here, we are trying. At least, were supposed to be trying. I dont have the actual figures but what has been invested in the space programme? Billions? Now considering the amount of things wrong with this world do you really think even billions of pounds/dollars/whatever is going to make much of a difference. Fair enough its going to have some impact but not much. And who says money can fix these problems anyway? For example, pollution can be cut back in LOADS of ways without spending money. In fact you can actually save money with some methods of cutting down pollution! Someone also mentioned poverty, etc. That could drastically be changed if the world governments would eliminate the loans they have given these countries. Anyway, getting sidetracked. As you can probably tell im for the space programme. Its just another type of science that we are trying to better. I could go on but im very tired at the momnet so im going to bed. I might add more tomorrow if i get a chance

Hi and welcome athelos!
I wonder, if in reality, we've just given up on 'accountability'. Show us, as taxpayers, how our dollars are being spend and the results/non-results. Here in Canada, we hear constantly about 'we need a study in this' - but although unfair to say, perhaps, we get far more talk than results or action of any kind. The means to create electrictiy without polluting our world has existed for ages - for instance, windmills. Working great in Alberta and have been for years ... yet, nothing futher has come of it. Cars that can run on grains - don't even see any sample ones on the market that consumers can buy, fall in love with and get away from using oil. Talk and more talk about poverty, billions spent on space research and on millions of dollars spent closing hospitals then deciding there isn't enough and having to built more and on and on it goes, year after year. Wonder where we went so wrong that we don't make our politicians accountable to we the taxpayers for the huge waste that goes on? Investing in the future is wonderful, but perhaps investing in the tangible future first would make more sense? You're right that perhaps billions of dollars/pounds isn't going to save the world - but we have to start someplace. Even if it's something 'small' and start with the welfare of our people, it's bound to make a dent? -------------------- Never let your computer realize you are in a hurry or just typing the last few words of a vital document.
While outer events might make one happy or sad, happiness itself is entirely internal, and at all times completely within one's power. |

I really don't think space exploration is beneficiary, if the goal is to colonize another planet. Most of us are in the middle class and will be left on earth. Only the Rich class would be able to afford to go live on another planet. Otherwise, I think space exploration does give us good research about other life forms and energy.

Youve touched on a valid point there RSD7. One i was thinking of while getting ready for bed last night.
You have to realise that there is a HUGE amount more to do with space exploration other than just colonizing different planets. The universe is too large for anyone or anything to even comprehend! Now with all that out there who can say that it would be a waste of time exploring as who knows just exactly what is out there? MaraM, you say that we should invest in a tangible future. This is the point of exploration however. Not just to colonise but to advance. We may well find better sources of energy out there than the ones we have at the moment. With a bit of imagination who knows what the future can bring? In my mind i see "stations" orbiting close to suns dedicated to the collection of solar energy. Now this may seem along way off to some but its not that far off surely. This may just be me fantasing about what could happen but who can say that it will never happen? Has anyone heard of the saying "who knows what tomorrow may bring?" The only way we could be assured of that answer is if were to give up on it altogether. -------------------- Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

I think going into space is very important. Mainly because of research. I think that a lot of new things can be learned from space and other planets (including Pluto).
2.) I said when they find something faster.
They know those rockets can only travel so fast. And with limited range. Its like us buying a car that got half a mile to a gallon and driving it around. |

I think what Fozzie means is that without funding for the space programme how are we supposed to research into faster ways of space travel?

 As if you would say such a thing!!!! Firstly you do get exercise. Its actually a very important part which (I believe) is required of the astronauts. Maybe not a brisk walk in the park but still exercise. And one day it could quite possible be a quick jog on another world!!!Fair enough, its cramped but no view?!?!? View View View View View View Hows that for a view? To each his own though i suppose. What seems horrible to you may seem beautiful to someone else.
