Operating system: Windows XP SP2
Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11
McAfee Internet Security Suite 8
ISP: SBC Yahoo DSL
Problem: When I tried to connect to the internet using the Yahoo shortcut key, I received a McAfee message that the trojan “Generic Adclicker.d” had been detected, and my C:\Windows\browser.exe file was deleted to complete the clean process. I looked on the Yahoo installer CD to see if the file was there. Through Explorer, I found the file on the CD and clicked on it. I immediately got a McAfee box saying “the file D:\Setup\Browser.exe is infected by the Generic Adclicker.d trojan and cannot be cleaned”. I disabled the Virus Scan and copied the file from the CD to the hard drive. Upon enabling Virus Scan, it immediately deleted the file from my hard drive again. I tried to re-install the Yahoo software through the CD and it will not do so.
Questions:
1) How is it that the original browser.exe file on CD is being detected as being infected with the trojan?
2) What steps do I need to take to be able to copy and use the browser.exe file?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
