I bought an Epson perfection 2580 but it seems slow. What should I get that is fast within a reasonable price. I have to scan a large number of comic books quickly. Also the bed on this won't hold a legal size paper to scan and i need it for that also.

Also I didn't like the software that runs with this Epson. Is there software/ freeware that will work for this. I am new to scanners so I'm if I am vague.

Here is the Epson perfection 2580 drivers.
I use a scanner quite a bit. I use to use a USB flatbed until I picked up a used HP 4 SCSI flatbed commercial scanner. It will pump out a scan in about 10 seconds. It is great for text, although I find the graphics a touch grainy. This model is 10 years old. For speed the commercial model can't be beat.
