Hi all,

I found a list on another thread in this forum with some suggested firewalls.

I dlld "securepoint" last night and am giving it a whirl!

It seems to be running in much the same fashion as Outpost as regards access warnings etc. and does not seem to be having a problem with F-Secure.

Holding thumbs, I will be accessing Steve Gibson's www tonight to check this FW with Shields-Up! and will post the result later.

Cheers for now,

Kev'

How does it compare to ZA and user friendliness without a lot of picky settings and slowing the computer down?????

mad.gif Hi all,

Securepoint didn't even run properly!!!!! It installed and requested a re-start, and then--- KAPOW all sorts of repeating error mesages in German and a total lockup.

This may be a XpSp2 issue, I dunno, but I advise STAY AWAY from it.

Georgia - my original problem was that ZA wouldn't even load on my system, there appears to be a compatibility issue with it and my AV F-Secure, so I have stayed with Outpost which seems to be working well - no conflicts, and very capable of "learning".

I am not going to try any further FW's, I'm going to stay with Outpost

Regards,

Kev'

EDIT: I have just done a "Shields Up" test at www.grc.com (Seve Gibson's Site), and achieved a TOTAL stealth status for my system - that's awsome (first 1056 ports). And this is using Outpost with all the other Spyware preventatives.

I guess that Outpost is doing it's job!!

Kev'

I've been reading this thread with interest -- though I don't understand all the technical jargon, I'm reading up on it -- especially since it dealt with how F-secure affects the installation of a firewall.

May I ask you all a few questions? (If it is more appropriate to start a seperate thread, just holler.)

My situation is a bit odd. Last month my father's computer got hijacked and Grinler cleaned up the mess. (If you like details, here's the HJT Log thread. The importance of installing a firewall is now obvious to me, but not, it seems, to any in the office -- I guess the seriousness of the situation didn't quite sink in as they didn't see me fret at the computer in the middle of the night when I did most of the computer cleaning. I repeatedly asked about getting a firewall, each time they said they were looking into it. The latest anwser was they "think F-secure acts as a firewall" (we have F-Secure anti-virus 5.42 and F-Secure Management Agent 5.00) I haven't heard about it since.

Anyways, I've decided it's time to try a few things myself. But I'm very reluctant to experiment, since things are running smoothly with the computer now and the fact that it is used also in a professional capacitl doesn't leave me too much trial-and-error room. (I still might chicken out and choose the "leave well enough alone" option.)

I like to be able to try a few things all with the knowledge that if they don't work out I can go back to the initial set-up, as if nothing happened. Is that at all possible?

A few questions:

1. You mentioned an F-secure firewall add-on, Kewlamh. What is it called? I have trouble finding info on this.

2. Am I correct in understanding that after your quest to update to a more powerfull firewall, you find Agnitum Outpost Free is the most compatible with f-Secure?

3. Kerio firewall does seem quite userfriendly. But I understand the access to that firewall (the free version) is not password protected? Can anybody recommend a free, userfriendly firewall with password access? Or is there no such thing?

4. Can a firewall be used to block out specific URL's, or can anybody suggest a better solution for that?

5. If you uninstall a firewall if anything goes wrong - I mean in the way of configuration, interference with other programs etc. - will the pre-install situation be restored, "as if nothing happened"? Is there an on-and-off switch on these things? I guess what I mean is, can I download the firewall and explore its possibilities gradually i.e. outside office hours while having it turned off during office hours, so that any malconfiguration of the firewall on my part won't interfere with daily office activity?

6. Would it be better if I leave well enough alone?

Those F-Secure programs are very powerful. The Servers where you work are no doubt well protected making your work station protected as well. There are a number of routers in your workplace also that contain firewalls. Anything that you do at your particular workstation would be redundant. I admire your concern for security but the people who look after your computers need to be aware of any security programs in use for trouble shooting purposes. I would let them look after it.

Thank you for your swift reply, Leurgy.

But ... doesn't the fact that the system got infected to the extent it did mean that there are serious security holes?

Let professionals do what they do. Yes, of course. It's just that [...] while cleaning up the computer mess earlier this month I found that quite a bit of porn has been downloaded onto the computer. Date and time confirm this was done during lunch break, sometimes even during office hours. [...] It's like letting the mouse guard the cheese.

Edit: I found a simple solution in Microsoft Internet Explorer Help: "Blocking access to web pages". The following is an excerpt from it:

To specify Web sites that others can always or never see

1. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
2. On the Content tab, under Content Advisor, click Enable. If you've already enabled Content Advisor, click Settings, and then type the supervisor password.
3. Click the Approved Sites tab, type the Internet address (URL) of a Web site, and then choose whether you want others to always or never have access to this site.
Repeat this process for each Web site that you want to set access for.

It all seems a bit petty. But as words failed to transfer the message, maybe this will ...

Hi Touse,

An apology is due - I referred to the F-secure firewall as an add-on, but I was badly mistaken. The firewall came as a part of the package given to me by my employer, and after speaking to my IT fellas, they say that this is ALWAYS included in the package as a SEPARATE intallation, as does the "Backweb" app. (Don't use this one BTW).

As far as the use of any learning firewall is concerned, as far as I know, the FW does not modify the actual app trying to access the net, or any reaching your system if you have "allowed" them. The "Allow" is stored in the FW Database. and has no affect on any application. Thus, if you decide to uninstall the FW, there will be no loss of data at all.

I have had absolutely no problems with conflict between Outpost and F-secure, and am very happy with the protection on my system.

Without denigrating the abilities of the other free FW's available, I have had conflict problems with Symantec, and Securepoint.

I do however suggest that you check out what is available and test, test, test, until you find the solution that is best for your system, and not necessarily just take my word for it!!!

Happy downloading and testing,

Regards,

Kev'

EDIT: Touse, I have just re-read your post, and sadly have to inform you that the F-secure 5.42 Anti-virus and the Management agent are PURELY an anti-virus solution, and DO NOT act as a Firewall!!!!

BTW, Outpost is available at www.agnitum.com if you would like to have a look!!
