BleepingComputer.com: Lan Settings Not Optional

Please help!

I have just switched from dial up to LAN nad although my connection says it's operational it does not actually do anything. I am accessing the web now by using my old dial up. in internet options/connections tab, , I cannot click on anything except the SETUP tab. Ie, nothing else is highlighted as such. I don'y know whether this is connected to the problem or not. In WIN XP help and support, I ran the Network Diagnose Scan system - result is that internet explorer web proxy not configured. In desperation, I have copied the scan results here. Please can you help but bear in mind that I am not really all that computer literate. Thank you!

What type of connection do you have and what brand and model of modem. Are you using a router or hub? What brand and model?
Looking at your log I would believe you do not have a ethernet connection for what ever reason.

My Modem (for dial-up) is Motorola SM56 Speaker phone (Com 3)

Dial up Server PPP 95.98/NT4/2000 ( although I am on WX Prof)


The ADSL came from Telkom (.co.za) (south Africa) and its called Premium Combo Wireless / Wi-Fi compliant.\

Router or HUB ??? Have no idea. How do I check?

Open up IE and type in the address bar 192.23.217.130 if that does not work try 196.168.1.1 . If a user\password screen pops up enter admin\admin and see if it let you in. According to what I have learn your DSL modem has a router built in.(That's a good thing)

196.168.1.1 Did work . This produced results of other people postings on the subject. There was no option for user/password. I just typed in the number in the address bar, no www or anything else. Is that correct?

Yes, if 192.168.1.1 work and you were able to enter the setup page that is fine. You need to make sure the modem is setup to allow other computer to receive setting from the modem.
Look for a setting "DHCP" you will want it enable.

I was not able to enter the setup page for 192.168.1.1. The web search results were of results of sezrches by other people. So, no, it didn't work.

OK. Go to the "Start" button and then "Run". Type in cmd and press <Enter>. At the command line prompt type in ipconfig and press <Enter>.
What is list at the computer's IP address (that would be the second line). And what is the Default Gateway IP Address?
