For what it's worth, I've been using a freeware registry cleaner from Eusing Software (www.eusing.com) for the last 1 1/2 years without problems or harmful effects of any kind. None. I run it once every couple of weeks and it keeps my registry clean and my PC running smoothly. In addition, it also has registry backup & restore functionality. This is my one & only experience using a registry cleaner so I can't speak to whatever problems others have had, but all I know for sure is that they haven't happened to me.

Hello nodgnoc and welcome to Bleeping Computer.
When posting a reply with a quote you can use the Quote button located in the lower right corner of the post you are commenting on. It is mandatory but if will save you quite a bit of typing.
Your comments on registry cleaners are noted and well taken. This topic comes up fairly frequently. We generally are speeching to the user who is looking for the quick fix and does not know enough about the registry to make an informed decision about how or when to modify the registry. You sound like you have thought out your plan of action and if the the registry were damaged could reverse the damage.
While a neat and clean registry will aid in better performance it will not always do so. As a matter of fact it can damage performance and lead to unrepairable damage. Since registries are as unique finger printers everyone should also, for the most part, have a unique approach to editing it.
You are backing up your registry, and that is good. Unfortunately Most users look at backing up any part of they computer as boring and not necessary. This is one of the main reason we shy away from auto fixes and registry modification, unless e have pin pointed a specific problem. Then the fix offered will be a specific as the problem is self.
Your recommendation was very good. You recommended the product and made it very clear that the back feature was offered.
Thank you for taking time to post here at BC. I'm looking forward to reading more of your replies and\or questions.
