I bought F-Prot... It seems to be working..?

I prefer to shut off all my softwares auto-updating functions, and do all that manually... because when they auto connect they suck up all the Ram in this antique PC... And that might happen when I'm on a roll writing, or pix editing.. the interruption can destroy a roll in a second...

F-Prot's auto-updater pops-up every five-minutes.. blocked by NetVeda's settings...
I turned off NetVeda's irritating pop ups, and uninstalled F-Prot's updater.. and still it sucked up the RAM, every five minutes when it tried to connect to the Net...

I PM'ed F-Prot, asking what registry keys I needed to delete to stop the auto-updater from its irritating attampts to connect to the Net... They didn't reply... I suppose it a trade secret..? Now I wish I had never bought this dam F-Prot...

I had no option but to dump F-Prot, to give me a little peace from its irritating updater... It's my computer, Not F-Prot's!... It's like a turd that just won't flush.. and like an invisible mosquito that just won't quit stinging every five-minutes...

Two things: Does anyone know how to kill F-Prot's updater?..

And.. What is the best AVS for an old W98se desktop?..

I tried Norton AVS with BlackIce FW, but some slick bully-hacker shut them both down faster than I could blink, while he trashed my OS... And while I'm at it.. is NetVeda any good?.. I'm trusting it at the moment...

Hi DonaldJ,
I would recommend for AV.... AVG Antivirus there is a free and pay version on that page

I would add Spybot S&D and Spywareblaster
from HERE

You may be able to stop F-prot from the startup in Spybots advanced tab
Also grab a firewall

Thanks Boop

F-Prot refunded me... but I'll reinstall it, and give that a try... I have Spybot

Every time I've tried AVG, about five times in three years, it freezes my computer, and blocks me from using the Net.

I just tried BitDefender, and the dern thing act just like F-Prot, in that it forever tries to connect to the Net every five minutes, momentarily draining the RAM on each attempt.. and I tried everything to shut down its auto-updater, and couldn't... I'll check the Spybot advanced for that solution with both of them...

I emailed SecurityShield with a raft of questions... They tell me my PC can't handle SS...

So.. I'll give AVG another try...

__________

I'm running NetVeda FW.. What are your views and insights on NV?..

I like ZoneAlarm, but I read somewhere in the Mozila forums that ZA doesn't protect Firefox and Seamonkey...

I gave BlackIce and Norton AVS a good full year's try.. but several times, some hacker shut them both down before trashing my OS.. so I dumped BI, and folded the Norton CD...

DAM!.. trying to find security that works in 98se is like trying to fly by flapping your arms real fast...

You might try one of these two, both of which say they work for Windows 98:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I know you can set it to manual updates.

System requirements found here: http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html

This one also says it works with Windows 98. I don't know if you can set it to manual updates though.
