I cannot comment on the Western Digital drive. I do use their hard drives in my desktops and have been pleased. I personally own a Lacie external USB drive and am well pleased with it.

I have had a W-D My Book Essential Edition for about 7 months now (the 500 gB version). It worked very well until recently, when it started spitting out random errors. I contacted W-D, they gave me an RMA almost immediately and then sent me a replacement immediately.
It's the first W-D drive that's caused me problems that I haven't screwed up myself (although a couple of recent power outages may have contributed to it). But it didn't die traumatically, and I was able to recover my data - so I'll vote in favor of it. -------------------- - John
