I have the basic security programs like anti spyware, antivirus, spyware prevention programs, but do i need a rootkit checker? I noticed them on majorgeeks but never have installed one. If I do need one, which one is the most effective? Thanks.

If you run a good antivirus on your machine than it should detect if a rootkit has infected your machine. But it is always a safe bet to have another program to make sure that your antivirus don't overlook a rootkit, I use Trojan Hunter which is one the best for finding those hard to find trojans and rootkit is another type of trojan.
