How Do You "start" An Audio Device

my problem is quite simple ihave no sound other than windows alerts. I have realtek ac97 audio card my device manager says its "enabled but not started" I've checked in services, but the only relelvent thing i could see was Windows Audio which is started. How can i start the damm thing

Please do following :
My Computer - Right mouse klick - Properties - Hardware - Hardware control-Controls for sound video and games, and look for your sound card. Right klick propperties what does it say?

it says "device working properly" in the "general" tab but under "properties" tab if i expand any tab highlight the drop (eg expand audio devices select "realtek AC97 audio") down then click properties (bottom right) it says "status: driver enabled but has not yet been started"
