I'm curious if anyone knows if Dragon Naturally Speaking ( http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/ ) still the best voice recognition software? I haven’t tried it in years, has it gotten better in the meantime. Anyone tried a recent version?

I have Dragon Naturally Speaking 8... never used any version before that one, but at the moment, I had to put it on hold because of computer issues on the computer it was installed on.
It seems great, .... just talk, and it'll type up what you're saying. I also need a better microphone. I am using the mic that came with my web cam, but that crap is between my ear and my mouth (the mic). I need the mic DIRECTLY in front, or near my mouth.
As far as one more recent than the version 8, I have no idea if there is even one available.

I've heard some bad comments about it - but no alternatives were offered from those who said this. The bad comments centered around it's ability to distinguish common words without having to retrain it constantly.

The version I am looking at is 9.0, so I'm heartened by your review (it can only be better, right?). The website above claims that the new version needs NO training, that it works straight out of the box. That is what I was concerned about as I remember 6 years ago watching my friend train a voice recog. program (unsure if it was Dragon) and it looked awfully boring. Also - the new version comes with a headset/microphone which I would hope is the best for using with Dragon. So, all looks good. Do you ever have it read out text to you? What kind of voice does it use for that?
