It's not a bomber, it's the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, a parasite fighter.
The reason for the short stubby shape, was so it could be carried in the bomb bay of a B-36 Peacekeeper.
It was to be used as an escort fighter, on extended range missions.
If the bomb group ran into hostiles, a few Goblins could be dropped, take care of the hostiles, then return to the mother ship, and dock with a trapeze, using the retracting hook.
The project was scrapped because the turbulence around the bomber created difficult control problems.
Also, the speed and maneuverability, wouldn't allow it to compete with the hostile aircraft of the time.

On a side note, the first experiments with parasite fighters, were carried out by the Soviet airforce, in the early 30's, I believe.
It consisted of carrying 2 fighters, on top of the wing, of a bomber.

You're welcome, Learner87.
Out of curiosity, where did you get your information from?

If you happen to watch the History, or Military channels, try to catch the program on X-Planes.
The Goblin is usually mentioned, along with several other interesting, failed projects.
