Here where I live, 95 percent of the political commercials are negative in the worse sense.
My Opponent failed to pay his property taxes 15 times.
My Opponent's company was subject to an government lien.
My Opponent is a toady of the governor who sold our tollroad and made us all go to daylightsavingstime.
It got a lot worse over time. One news team on a local TV station reviewed the adds and divided the claims therein into "true" or "needs clarification" ---the latter was a polite way of saying they didn't tell the truth or so slanted the facts that they were false.
Representative democracy only works well if the electorate is well-informed. I wonder what would happen if political ads were banned and the millions spent for them were pooled and used for more face-to-face debates and Q&A sessions?

John
