Where Is The Zip Program Located Trying to unzip a .tar.gz program to my comp

I was told that you can just plain unzip a .tar.gz program, so was I went to open with and tried to locate it on my computer, have no idea where to find the file, and tried running a search for zip (including hidden and system files of course, what's the use of search without that)

What is your Operating System (XP Home, XP Pro, etc., ....)?
If using XP, right click the file, and select Extract All... and follow the directions.

XP Home and I don't have an extract all option, I need to choose the correct program from the open with... thing first.

What happens when you double click the file?
Here's a free 3rd party file compression program.
See if this will do it:

.tar.gz file formats are gzip formats. Thats why the XP zip shows ghosted. Here is a snip from gzips FAQ's
