Ive recently installed a new stick of ram into my computer and all was fine but now my computer keeps shutting down on its own. The top of the base unit seems to be getting quite hot, could this be why its cutting out? After its cut out it wont always reboot and when it does it comes up with this isnt a genuine copy of windows(even though it is) and that some registry files had to be recovered from memory. Would formating the harddrive and reinstalling from scratch help?

Hi kev25v6,
About the shutdowns... Look inside your computer and check the processor fan. Make sure it didn't come unconnected during the RAM install. Also check to make sure ALL case fans are free from stray cables or anything that may impede their running. If everything is clear, remove the new stick of RAM and see if the computer runs. It could be a bad stick and somehow is causing power issues.
Windows XP problems? Retry the validation process at least once. Electronic verification errors do occur. You can also find the Certificate of Authenticity number and call Microsoft. Technical support is available from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PC SAFETY (1-866-727-2338). They can help you reauthenticate your copy of Windows XP.
I hope this helps,
