Hi

Yesterday I started getting pop-up ad's appearing on my PC, I ran SpyBot and Adaware. They reported I had MotorMedia and a number of other problems. I tried to erase these but they still appear to be present. Ant help would be appreciated. Listed below is my HijackThis Log

Thanks in advance

Neil

Hi,

Please do the following in the order given. You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Uninstall the following programs:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select popupwithcast
- Click Remove
- Select webhancer
- Exit.

Reboot your computer.

• Download and install Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here. Exit Ewido when done.
Do NOT perform a scan yet.

• Please set your system to show all files.
- Click Start.
- Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files
and folders.
- Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webHancer Survey Companion] "C:\Program Files\webHancer\Programs\whSurvey.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [septpop06apsept] C:\program files\popupwithcast\septpop06apsept.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.media-motor.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mmohsix.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.
Then exit HijackThis.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Close ALL browsers and open / windows.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Scan with Ewido as follows:
1. Launch Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports\
6. Exit Ewido when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If Ewido "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.
2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Post back with the results of the ewido scan and a new HijackThis log.

I await your reply

Hi,

I see your problems. You've got some nasty infections.

• Re-name HijackThis.exe to kitty.exe by doing the following:
- Navigate to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
- Right-click onto HijackThis.exe and select "Rename"
- Type kitty.exe and hit Enter.

• Now, double-click onto kitty.exe (which is still hijackthis) and post back with the new HijackThis log.

Hi,

QUOTE
FYI I get a file opening saying "IE settings..." when I first switch on and have had files opening saying problems with "RunDll32"

When you say you 'get a file opening' - can you give me more details? It sounds like you're saying that you get a prompt when you bootup your computer, but what more does it say? Also, what kinds of problems does it say that you're having with RunDll32?

Please do the following:

• Please download VundoFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
- Click the Scan for Vundo button
- Once it is done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files
- Click YES
- Once you click YES, your Desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
- When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer
- Click OK

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, so simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Once VundoFix has completed scanning, please do not run it again.
If you run it more than one time, you will overwrite the original log generated when it was run the first time.

• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log - and the answers to my questions.

Hi

I did what you asked and the logs are listed below. When the PC rebooted I got an IE window open up that was looking for a webpage "http://iesettingsupdate" eventually the window timed out and it said cannot find server or DNS error. When I launched IE to go to bleeping Computer I got another window open up that was looking for "www.winantivirus.com/download/2006" I closed the window. With regard to the Rundll32 problems, I have tried to delete my tempory internet files and the program hung up and reported that there was a problem.

Hi,

Thank you for the information. Please read the directions below and then follow the steps as stated.

• Please download combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to your C:\ drive so that combofix will then be C:\combofix.

Then go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following: C:\combofix.exe /v ddayv

Hit Enter. This should start combofix.

*Do not click on the window while the fix is running because that will cause your system to hang.
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. *Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100

When finished and after reboot, it should open a log named combofix.txt

• Post this log in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
