Quake 3 works better with Pentium 4 and needs good graphic drivers, Pentium 3 handles Quake 2 well. you have to meet the system requirements for Quake 3 to have it working well on your system.

My ex-gamer is a p3 800 mHz w/ 512 megs of ram and a 64 meg MX440 GeForce 4 agp card....it handles any Quake 3-based game just fine, even in 1024x768 with decent detail settings.

Have you tried installing the latest vid drivers? That's always a good place to start, especially with openGL problems.
