I've been using Skype for years now and haven't had any problem with it. I run SpyBot regularly, and have not been plagued with spyware. I was a little irritated by the pop-up requests to share details while I worked, even though I never have "Skype me" mode on. Eventually, I found the setting that shut that feature off, but now I'm not notified when a business contact tries to call. But ... it does give high quality connections and is always free Skype-to-Skype anywhere in the world. I recommend against getting any of the cute little add-ons offered for it. Those are apparently checked for Skype compatability, but .... I don't think they're guaranteed to be safe in other ways. Anyway ... I tried one or two and ... coincidence or not ... had a problem or two. Also found the ones I used difficult to uninstall.

Skype is going to the effort of making their voice service available via cell phone. It's my understanding that it now works through WiFi hot spots, which means that anytime your smart cell phone is near an open WiFi connection, you can make Skype calls. (VoIP) You can also use your Pocket PC of course.

The following comment seems outside the box of this discussion, but it's about Skype, so I guess someone might find it interesting. Skype uses proprietary technology to do VoIP. There are a bunch of companies developing / offering VoIP service through cell phones. Those technologies that use standard rather than proprietary technology are more likely to fit into the regular cell network ... i.e. doing away with the need to be near an open WiFi port to use the service. But then ... all of the old style communication will be switched over to VoIP within the next few years anyway ... so this issue should only concern people who want in early. I'm using truphone for VoIP through my cell phone (only at WiFi hot spots) and can make many international calls to regular land lines for free.

When one d/l's the duo (Kazaa/Skype) they will be infested with a mindboggling amount of spyware. As one reporter found 2,000 and some odd traces, via Pest Patrol.

I have been wondering about this, since my use of Skype hasn't resulted in this problem. I do use SpyBot regularly; so if Skype is an open door for spyware, I guess SpyBot must be blocking the spyware effectively.

That said -- if the goal is simply to chat with friends with text ... MSN is built into Windows. No need for Skype. Does MSN also provide free VoIP?
