BleepingComputer.com: Question About Norton 2006

Howdy,

I have Norton Security 2006 on my computer.

Last week I down loaded the new Yahoo tool bar. Norton has apparently now teemed up with Yahoo because Norton is now doing the scans Yahoo used to do. The Norton icon is in the Yahoo Tool bar.

I did a full system scan a few minuets ago using the Norton scan that came with Yahoo.
The scan results reported that I had a trojan called BIGEYE in my system.

I looked it up on Google and it turns out to be a very high risk type item.

They described it as being a RAT (Remote Access Trojan)

I deleted it.

My question is this.
How come Norton Security 2006 did not catch it before it entered the computer ?


If Yahoo's Norton program detected it, it seems to me the product that I purchased should have caught it in the first palce.

I also have: SpyWare Blaster, Spyware Guard, SpyBot-S&D, Ad-Aware, ewido and Windows Defender.
They all missed it to.

As for why Bigeye wasn't caught when it arrived - it may have been on your system prior to some updates to the AV. New malicious code is always produced before new code protecting you from it. Additionally, no one anti-virus or anti-spyware etc. is going to catch 100% of anything.

Thanks for the reply.

I had the old Yahoo tool bar for almost a year. In the old version of the Yahoo tool bar, Yahoo had an icon you could click and it would do a quick scan. The only things it ever caught were tracking cookies. I never relied on it for security, but since it came with the tool bar I used it.

Last week I happened to be looking at the Yahoo home page. They had a down load for the NEW Yahoo tool bar that now includes Norton Security. Norton only scans. You can choose a quick scan or full scan.

The day" BIGEYE " showed up I had done a full scan in safe mode using all my security programs. The only thing that came up were 3 tracking cookies.

Later in the day after doing some net surfing (no porno, music, games or crazy sites) I ran the Norton full scan from the Yahoo tool bar. That caught "BIBEYE".

This is were my question lies. I am probably going to be using the wrong terminology when I try to state this, but I will do my best.

If the Norton security scan that comes with the NEW Yahoo tool bar had the definition to be on the look out for Bigeye, why wouldn't the paid version that I have installed (I have had it for three months) have the same definition ? If it does why didn't my paid version catch Bigeye and warn me before it installed itself ?

My thoughts are that Norton had to be aware of this Trojan or the Yahoo version of Norton never would have caught it. Could it be that Norton just has not gotten around to sending an update to Norton Security 2006 users ?

Last question. Am I making any sense ?

Do you have real-time protection on? Do you have the latest definitions for your paid Norton?

I suppose the good news is that this Trojan was caught before damage was done.

I just thought it to be very odd that the free Norton caught it while the paid version just stood by and let it infect my computer.

Well, I will let this die after this post.

I asked Norton for help in answering the question of why the free Norton scan that comes with the new Yahoo Tool bar ( latest definitions available installed ( 8-23-06) was doing a better job than my paid Version (latest definitions installed 1 1/2 hours ago.)

I explained that I just ran a scan with the tool bar version and it reported a Trojan in my system which I deleted, yet the paid for Norton Security 2006 did not alert me prior to the Trojan being installed.

I asked if the two Norton programs had the same definitions.

I was told I would need technical assistance to answer that question. Cost $39.00.


I am going to dump Norton tomorrow and follow most folks lead on this board and install something else.

Possibility:

The Norton on the Yahoo tool-bar is an anti-malware or trojan product; whereas, your purchased Norton is an anti-virus. This would result in the two having different definitions as they would be programmed to look for different things.

This is what I bought from Norton (Security 2006) a couple of months ago. It is suppose to include trojans, spyware,etc.
