There are free programs that will allow you to clone your harddrive. One is:www.pcinspector.de/clone-maxx/uk/welcome.htm

Generally you can get this utility for free from the hard drive manufacturer.

Also, Digital Dolly has been highly recommended here.

Also, there's a freeware tool called DriveImageXML at http://www.runtime.org

Personally, I use the Acronis tools for my needs, but they are payware.

But, this begs a question - Are you trying to save the pain of reinstalling everything - or are you trying to save a bunch of data.

If it's just data - copy it all to CD's and then install the OS on the new drive fresh.

If it's to save the pain of reinstalling - please read this article so you can avoid some of the pitfalls: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html

Generally, when switching/copying an OS from one hard drive to another it's best to remove everything possible from the hardware list before transferring it to the new hard drive. This shouldn't be a huge problem since you're only changing the hard drive - but be aware that this process doesn't guarantee that your data won't be destroyed in the process.

**If you need a more detailed explanation, please ask for it. I have the Knack. **

I was directed to this site for free backup stuff... But I downloaded Acronis 7. Take your pick!

Yeah.. True Image is a rather good software and I think that it will help you to solve your problem. You can either backup or clone your hdd in order to save the important data. Get a free version of True Image here and look through this users guide.
