Well since my tastes encompass a large area I would say either:
Brutal Technical Death Metal: Nile
Black/Folk Metal: Burzum

Well, i don't think those 2 categories "encompass a large area" disneycast, lol.

Anyway:

Current Metal (in general): Devildriver
Classic Metal: Black Sabbath ("War Pigs" rules)
Funk Rock: Red Hot Chili Peppers, however i'm speaking for the 1990-2000 era peppers (Flea is the greatest bassist ever)

Indie:Ugly Casanova
Doom Metal:Witchfinder General
Experimental Rock: Frank Zappa
Joke Metal/Punk: Green Jello
and then random stuff like sublime and Meshuggah

I am sorry Nat Sci but if youre gonna give it a subgenre then give it the correct one: Breaking Benjamin:post-grunge/alternative metal band

Well, considering the millions and millions of sub-genres available, i think it'd be hard to list every aspect of every band. I hate the way metal is broken into 20 different categories. The only "sub-genres" i recognize (as in, acknowledge their existance) is "classic", "speed", "current", and "death/black". All other sub-genres are just picky little labels.

Mudvayne is one of my favorite bands, but i literally laughed when ryknow gave an interview and said that the group was "math metal"...

Mudvayne is a numetal band. They claim to be math metal, but we all know that math metal would be bands like MESHUGGAH(technical metal) or the dillinger escape plan (mathcore).

Ahhh... a ask a thousand people get a thousand different answers
kinda question, my taste in music is fairly eclectic, depending on mood.
as I like the Soundtrack to "oh Brother where art thou" as much as
Iron Maiden or Pantera.
but to paraphrase Willie Nelson "to all the metal I've loved before"
Black Sabbath w/Ozzy ,OZZY and Motorhead, being the cream of the
crop for me in "Classic" I also like the early Six Feet Under and
Fear Factory stuff(Death?) these days it's INSOMNIUM or B.L.S.
here's a free vid. , you'll want broadband probably, 17.2mb
http://insomnium.cjb.net/ "the Elder" in Downloads
I don't get too wraped up in labels , the world could use less labels

Zakk Wylde = Greatest Guitarist Ever. Love his work w/ ozzy, especially "Hellraiser". Motorhead rules too, i just can't get over lemy's mole, lol.

Never heard insomnium, definately going ot have to check them out.

While Zakk Wylde may be a great guitarist, I disagree that he is the best. Herman Li from Dragonforce (some extreme power metal band[i hate powermetal]) is really good. They are doing really well with the single "through the fire and the flames". My pick for best guitarist: (well there is two) Euronymous or Karl Sanders

I find it funny that this has been viewed 40 times with responses from only like three or four people. Come on list bands from any genre that you love.

You may be right , Zakk can "fry" a fretboard without even trying it seems
(my favorite is "bleed for me" and a very exelent acoustic "America" )
Ill-Starred Son and Shades of Deep Green are my Favorites by Insomnium
"Melodic scandinavian death metal at its finest "
Motorhead is in "The Decline of Western Civilization Part II:
The Metal Years" rockumentary

I like Contemp Christian music.
One of the best bands(there are many good ones) is Third day.

I listen to some country but most of it anoys me with its winy words about how some guys girlfriend(or wife) left him or such.

Hey! I only listen to classical music, and the closest to a "band" is the Alban Berg Quartet.
Cheers,
John
