I just got Oblivion and it runs so slow it's almost unbearable. However the performance seems to improve in places like dungoens (first level). I cant update my drive firmware idk y. And I dont know if my Vid card has the latest drivers.

My current specs.

3.0 GHz processor
1GB RAM
256MB GeForce FX 5500

What you say seem to point to the graphics card. Dungeons are the least graphically intensive parts of the game. The fact is that you are below the minimum supported graphics cards with the FX 5500.

Oblivion FAQ said:

Supported Video Card Chipsets:
ATI X1900 series
ATI X1800 series
ATI X1600 series
ATI X1300 series
ATI X850 series
ATI x800 series
ATI x700 series
ATI x600 series
ATI Radeon 9800 series
ATI Radeon 9700 series
ATI Radeon 9600 series
ATI Radeon 9500 series
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 series
NVIDIA GeForce FX series (5700 or above)
To have any chance to get it to run you need to have every graphics setting turned all the way down, and it still might not be enough. Frankly a graphics card update is probably the only solution.

Oblivion is a very resource hungry game. I get slow down's when I enter towns for a few seconds but nothing too bad. I would suggest upgrading the vid card to at least a 512MB version of a recent card such as the ATI 1900X series or nVidia's 7XXX series. If you can get the game running smoothly enough, you'll have a much better time.

another thing you can do, is turn down all the item, tree fade, etc as Low as it can go
then turn down all the details in water off and just generally lower distandt land, view distance, etc. It is annoying at first but makes it run alot faster, get a video card too, thne you cna gradualllly put those settings back up, depending on how good the card is

Turning down all the graphical settings is a good way to increase framerates. A good thing to do is to strike a balance between eye candy and speed. Reducing the graphical options too much is like watching the Godfather on cable instead of DVD. You get what the story is about but all the good parts are gone.

Well.... I've been snooping around and found this XFX PVT42KUDE3 Geforce 6800XT 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card While it's not 512MB one reviewer said he had most of his settings turned up pretty high with almost no framedrop. and Im currently building another machine so this one will do.... for now  Im not holding back on this one. except for the new 7950's, screw that lol
