Getting ready to add memory to my Dell Demension 2400. It currently has a PC2700 DDRSD Ram-128 MB. My questions:

1. CanI/Should I use DDR DIMM memory?
2. Are all of the memory slots the same these days-184 pin?
3. I think my machine has two slots?--if so can I just add a 256MB to the other slot?
4. If possible please direct me to some info that I can refer to?

I just bought some ram for my laptop. No there are different slots. I paid 12.00 for 256mb pc2100 ram. I have 2 slots so I just add the 256mb in the other empty slot to make 512mb in my laptop. You should make sure its compatible. Maybe buy the same name brand as whats in there now if there is a brand.

Yes, you should use DDR. Also make sure that it says PC2700 to match the speed.

QUOTE

If you have DDR RAM, then it is 184-pin. I do not know of any DDR that has any different pin configurations.

Yes you can do this. I would suggest that you put the 256 in slot 0, and the 128 in slot 1.

Sure no problem. First, you want to make sure on what you have. Everest Home can tell you what kind of RAM you have, and much much more. When you see what you have, and what you can use, then you can go shopping. I will be able to provide some places later tonight.

Crucial

Kingston

Corsair

These are reputable companys that stand behind their products. Also, check out the info on
their sites. There's a lot of good info about ram, definitely worth the read.

Some additional info on ram:

There are such things as cheap , ninety day , or generic RAM, which is actually sold,
and doesn't meet the minimum standards of the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council), for use in computers. But it is still sold, and un-informed people, still buy it.

RAM can generally be divided into a few classes:
(Excepting Performance or Overclockers RAM, which is made to the highest tolerances)

Premium or Lifetime Warranty: This RAM is made from Identical chips, all tested
and meeting the assemblers standards, all from the same chip manufacturer and lot.
The capacitors and resistors are of the highest standard, and exceed the JEDEC
standard, and all are installed on a circuit board which is thicker than required . The
final product is tested to confirm that it is stable at the rated speed.

One Year Warranty: Very close, but may include memory chips from different batches,
although still the same manufacturer. The circuit board tends to be at least one ply
thinner, and the resistors and capacitors may have more variance. These still meet the
JEDEC standards, and are tested to make sure they are stable at the specified speed.

OEM: These are intended for sale to a manufacturer, not for resale, although they
often are sold retail. Often if you buy two sticks, you will find that they have memory
chips from different manufacturers. They still meet standards (the chips are certified to
meet the manufacturers specifications), but are often yet another ply thinner, and once
again, may have more variance in the tolerance of resistors and capacitors, and may
use fewer, than on higher quality RAM.

Generic or 90 Day RAM: This is the lowest quality you will generally encounter.
Often these are made of leftover chips; ones salvaged from returned and failed RAM,
RAM designed to run at a higher speed which failed and became unstable. They are
put on really thin boards, which do not meet the JEDEC standard. They rarely have
even the minimum number, and quality of resistors and capacitors, recomended by the
JEDEC .

Also, if you touch the RAM anywhere except the edges, you should know that the oils
and salts in your skin are corrosive, and will eventually damage the ram. And if you
touch it without observing anti-static precautions, you can cause damage, which may
show up immediately, or somewhere down the line.

This is why I always reccomend that you spend the extra money to buy Quality Name
Brand RAM
with a lifetime warranty. I also prefer to buy all RAM at one time when
possible, and at a minimum, make sure it has identical specifications (easiest method,
make sure it is same manufacturer and model).

Thanks all!

My biggest question now is will the DIMM (double inline..) fit in the slot. I dont want to buy the memory -open up the box and find out if the slot is different for DDRSD than it is for the DDR DIMM- I just downloaded the Everesthome 151--thanks--I will also go to the Dell site and check what is compatible-- thumbup.gif

MORE!!!!

I bought the memory module --PNY 512 MB PC2700--according to their configuration chart it is compatible--It shows that I have two sockets available for update--I assume the one now holds the OEM 128MB--will I install the new 512MB in the other slot? the chart says it should be installed in sets of (1) does that mean that the other OEM 128 MB must be removed?? If anyone can explain--I'd appreciate--I'm not going to do this until I understand completely-- a few years back I trashed a MB not knowing enough what I'm doing! crazy.gif crazy.gif

When it mentions that they must be installed in sets of 1, they mean as opposed to installing pairs at a time. This is typically when a motherbard has 4 or more slots. Since you only have 2 slots, it is ok to install them both.

I would be interested to see your Everest report, if you do not mind.

Hey Jason-Thanks,

That's what I thought also, that I CAN install the new one in the empty slot OK--That would give me 640MB memory-which sounds strange. I seem to recall that in olden days when the memory mods were like only 30 or 40 meg they had to be installed a certain way etc. Looking at the one I just bought -each little individual memory circuit on the board = 64 meg. I also recall years back working on systems that that had magnetic core memory circuits each one = each little core on the card able to store but one bit. In order to store any amount of data there had to be a whole cabinet full of memory cards, not mention driver and amplifier cards and and a large dual-trace oscilloscope to monitor and troubleshoot. This was the CPU--we also had large spinning memory drums that needed constant adjust and monitoring.

And I will post the Everest report right on this thread--am appreciative of your inputs--I am not going to do this upgrade for a while yet--I'm also planning on installing a VID capture card and a Sound card on this machine. thumbup.gif

OK it looks good so far. One more report that I would like for you to run and post.

Click Report -> report wizard. Have a check by motherboard and SPD only. This will tell you alot of stats on the RAM that you have. I will be able to match it up with the stats of another one to assure that you get the one that is the most compatible. You can check plain text for it.

Jason--here I think is the whole thing--thanks--I noted that the slots are for the DIMM memory mods?--so I think I'm Ok with the 512 SD DIMM module I bought.
