I know what you mean. It is all prference. I recommend the Puppy simple because it is so similar to '9x. The learning curve is low (ver.1.03 &1.0.4). I give away 25 to 40 computers, thru my chruch, each year. P-1 200mhz to P-III 550mhz (MY favorite) with Puppy on board. I burn and give DSL, Puppy and knoppix away for people to try. Most only use the word proccessor, internet (around here Bellsouth fo $5/month) and the chat program. The important thing for me is the free OS that anyone can use. I go thru all three then send them home to experiment. As long as they are happy, and not intimidated, I don't care which they use.
Like you said. A civil little war.

Merry Christmas.

I use Slackware, myself, though I am looking at buying one of those DSL keydrives.

I recommend going to Distrowatch and shopping for the Linux that best fits you. They have top-10 and top-100 lists of various categories as well as thorough breakdowns of each distribution.

Distrowatch also gives you direct links to download, home and support sites for each distro.

I know the discussion is aimed at Linux distributions, but I don't want other feasible UNIX flavours/distributions to be left of out the game. Take a look at these two options that are aimed at ease-of-use:

NexentaOS (based on SunOS 5.11) - http://www.gnusolaris.org/
PC-BSD (based on FreeBSD 6.0) - http://www.pcbsd.org/

Good luck in your search for that one special system.
