Is this a dial-up modem or BB (DSL or cable)?

Does it connect/disconnect at regular intervals? If so, then you may have a DHCP conflict.
If your computer slows down quite a bit, and you click something, and it takes forever for it to come up, then you may be having some rouge applications running. When it takes a certain amount of time, a pop-up comes up saying that you have 'timed out' do you wish to reconnect? Does that happen? Have you talked to your ISP? What have they told you? Have you cleared out your temporary internet files lately? It could be one of the reasons if your computer is running slow. BleepingComputer tutorial is an excellant tutorial on how to clear it out. I will be checking back on your responses. -------------------- We are all curious like a cat. We wonder, we ask, we learn.

none of these situations happen, I have windows washer and frequently wash my files. Only when I direct connect with somebody, my modem shuts off, the restarts.

You say that you are direct connecting to someone. Are you referring to a ftp site or just the internet?

to direct connect to someone on AOL Instant Messenger, is to well directly connect to them, to send large format objects. pictures, music, large files practically, in which you could not send in a regular chat window composed of just text messages.

Is AOL IM the only application that consistently disconnects you?

I do not use AOL, but from my understanding, IMs in general have a setting that prevent sending large files with them. May I suggest an alternate method? Have you tried to host the file(s) on a site, and in your IM, tell them the link?

I do not use AOL, but their Instant messenging service. Direct connect is mainly used for sending large files, mainly pictures . It basically opens a line between two computers, off of the independent AIM network. With some people my modem works find, with others, it resets itself.

I used to have a similar problem when sending large files using MSN messenger; we found that one way to solve this problem was to make sure we continued a conversation whilst exchanging files. Now this is not necessary on MSN, so you might want to try it. How large, on the average, are these files?
It may be that AOL's IM, which I have never used, does not "see" your file transfering and disconnects you. Regards, John -------------------- Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one should be silent.

That is a very good point, jgweed. Maybe a time-out setting needs to be changed

the person who is sending the file cannot talk at all, or continue the conversation while the file is being sent. the files range from 10K to 1000K.
